Day 1: Hanoi

The first day is primarily an arrival day. We checked into our hotel and attended the welcome meeting.

If I were doing this trip again, I would arrive a few days early. You don’t spend much time exploring Hanoi during the tour itself, and there is plenty to see. From museums and street food tours to nearby hikes and cultural sites, Hanoi deserves extra time.

Day 2: Halong Bay

We traveled from Hanoi to Halong Bay and boarded our boat.

What a way to start the trip! We spent the day cruising through Halong Bay’s famous limestone karsts rising dramatically from the water.

Later we went kayaking and even spotted monkeys along the shoreline. We wrapped up the day trying our hand at fishing from the boat.

Day 3: Halong Bay

One of my favorite experiences was taking a small boat into a cave hidden among the limestone formations.

After returning to shore, we visited an embroidery workshop and learned how these beautiful pieces are created. Many of the artisans had physical or intellectual disabilities, and I loved seeing a program that allowed them to showcase their talents while creating incredible artwork.

Day 4: Hoi An

Hoi An was my favorite city on the tour.

We learned about lantern making, participated in a tea ceremony, and explored local temples.

The river running through the city creates a magical atmosphere, especially at night when colorful lanterns reflect on the water and boats drift by under glowing lights.

That evening we attended the Bamboo Circus. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but it ended up being one of the most memorable performances of the trip. The acrobatics, music, storytelling, and artistry were incredible. If possible, I would recommend upgrading to VIP seating.

Day 5: My Son & Hoi An

Today we visited My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring ancient Hindu temple ruins.

May was quite hot, and I was grateful to have packed a portable fan. If you’re sensitive to heat, I highly recommend bringing one.

Despite the weather, the ruins were impressive. Many of the carvings remain remarkably detailed despite their age.

We also watched a traditional dance performance. The combination of music, costumes, lighting, and movement brought the site to life.

One of the fun perks of Hoi An is its tailoring industry. The day before, I had visited a tailor to select fabric and design a custom dress. Today I returned for a fitting before they completed the final alterations.

Having custom clothing made in Vietnam is one of those experiences that’s both practical and memorable.

Day 6: Ho Chi Minh City

This was the most emotional day of the trip for me.

We visited the War Remnants Museum, which presents the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective. As an American, I realized how little I had learned about many aspects of the war.

The museum is powerful. There are photographs, statistics, personal stories, historical exhibits, and entire rooms dedicated to the lasting impacts of the conflict.  I cried more than once while walking through the exhibits. At the end, I had to step outside, buy an ice cream, and spend some time petting a dog while trying to process everything I had seen.

One room focused on Agent Orange and its long-term effects. I couldn’t bring myself to go inside.

Although it was difficult, I think visiting was important. Travel isn’t always about beautiful scenery. Sometimes it’s about learning, listening, and understanding perspectives different from your own.  If you’re an empathetic person, just know this may be one of the heavier days of your Vietnam tour itinerary.

We also visited a historic house that contained hidden tunnels and storage areas used during the war.  TBH, surprised I fit lol.

The evening was much lighter, ending with several of us enjoying rooftop views of the city.

Day 7: Mekong Delta

Today we explored the Mekong Delta.

We visited small islands and learned about local industries, including coconut candy production. We also sampled snake wine and enjoyed an incredibly fresh lunch.

My favorite part was boarding small canoes and quietly paddling through narrow waterways lined with lush vegetation. It felt peaceful, private, and completely different from the busy cities we had visited earlier in the week.

Day 8: Departure Day

Today was departure day.

I do want to reiterate that this was a travel advisor familiarization trip and not a standard departure. It combined elements from several itineraries and travel styles.

A regular Intrepid departure may include additional destinations, activities, or experiences.

The Guide

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy small group tours is the opportunity to travel with local guides.

Supporting local guides helps keep tourism dollars within the destination, but it also dramatically improves the experience.

A local guide brings history, language, culture, food, and personal stories to life in a way that no guidebook can.  As a former teacher, I travel because I want to learn. Having someone who can explain the nuances of a place makes all the difference.  And since I have food sensitivities, it’s also nice having someone who can advocate for me when needed!

Accommodations for Vietnam Group Tours

Because this was a familiarization trip, we stayed in a mix of Comfort and Premium accommodations.

The Comfort hotel in Hanoi was comfortable and centrally located.

Our Halong Bay boat featured Premium-level accommodations and was one of the highlights of the trip.

The Premium hotel in Hoi An was beautiful and included a stunning pool.

Transportation

Most transportation was by comfortable passenger van.

We also took flights between some destinations, although not every Intrepid itinerary includes domestic flights.

Boats were a major part of the experience. Between Halong Bay cruises, canoes, river boats, and transfers, I spent a surprising amount of time on the water.

Food During Your Adventure Travel in Vietnam

You absolutely need to try pho while you’re in Vietnam.

Fortunately, you’ll have plenty of opportunities.

I also tried water buffalo because I always enjoy sampling unique local foods whenever possible. It was lean, flavorful, and surprisingly good.

Then there’s snake wine if you’re feeling adventurous enough to give it a try!

Free Time During an Intrepid Vietnam Group Tour

I thought Intrepid struck a nice balance between organized activities and free time.

Even when there wasn’t anything officially scheduled, many of us ended up exploring together anyway.

Hanoi in particular offered plenty of free time to browse shops and visit tailors creating custom clothing, suits, dresses, and leather goods.

Best Part of the Trip

Hoi An was my favorite destination.

Between the lantern-lit riverfront, tailor shops, tea ceremonies, and relaxed atmosphere, it felt like the perfect blend of culture, beauty, and fun.

Worst Part of the Trip

For me, it was the heat.  I traveled in May and was grateful to have packed a portable fan.

The War Remnants Museum was also emotionally challenging. Not because the museum was bad, but because the exhibits affected me deeply.
