Italy had been on my travel wish list for years, and after experiencing this incredible 13-day journey with Collette, I can confidently say it exceeded every expectation.

From the ancient wonders of Rome and the dramatic coastline of Capri to the rolling vineyards of Tuscany and the romantic canals of Venice, this itinerary offered a fantastic introduction to Italy’s most iconic destinations. What I appreciated most was the balance of guided sightseeing, authentic local experiences, and enough free time to explore on my own.

Day-by-Day Highlights

Day 1: Overnight Flight — Ciao, Italy!

The adventure began with an overnight flight to Italy. There’s always something exciting about boarding a plane knowing that incredible history, food, culture, and unforgettable experiences await once I step off the plane!

Day 2: Welcome to Rome

After arriving in Rome, we settled into the Eternal City and met our fellow travelers during a special welcome dinner featuring regional Italian cuisine and wine. It was the perfect introduction to both Italy and the group we’d be traveling with for the next two weeks. I knew if the rest of the food I would be eating throughout this trip was like tonight, I would be in for a treat! Good thing we walked a lot each day!

Day 3: Discovering Ancient Rome

Today was dedicated to exploring some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Highlights included the Colosseum, Baths of Caracalla, Circus Maximus, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Walking through centuries of history with a local guide brought ancient Rome to life.

Day 4: Rome at Your Own Pace

One of the things I appreciated most about this itinerary was the balance between guided sightseeing and independent exploration. I chose to visit Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica, which was an unforgettable experience. Other travelers spent the day shopping, dining, or wandering Rome’s charming neighborhoods. I could not imagine going through The Vatican without a guide, there was SO much to see and learn about as we walked through!

Day 5: Journey to Sorrento

We traveled south toward the beautiful Bay of Naples, stopping in Gragnano to tour a traditional pasta factory and enjoy lunch. Later, we arrived in Sorrento, where dramatic cliffs and stunning Mediterranean views welcomed us to Italy’s famous Amalfi Coast region.

Day 6: Exploring Capri

Today felt like stepping into a postcard. We cruised around the island of Capri, admiring the dramatic coastline, sea caves, and famous Faraglioni rock formations. The island’s charming streets, boutiques, cafés, and incredible views made this one of my favorite days of the trip. Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying the famous lemon sorbet served in a lemon!

Day 7: Pompeii and Tuscany

The morning began with a visit to Pompeii, one of the world’s most fascinating archaeological sites. Walking through the ancient city preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius was both moving and remarkable. Later, we traveled north through the rolling hills of Tuscany before arriving in Florence.

Day 8: Renaissance Florence

Florence is truly an open-air museum. Our guided tour showcased the city’s Renaissance treasures, including Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and Palazzo Vecchio. The afternoon was free to explore, shop, visit museums, or simply enjoy the Tuscan atmosphere and locating the famous wine windows!

Day 9: Pisa, Wine Tasting, and Venice

We stopped in Pisa to see the iconic Leaning Tower (it’s still leaning by the way) before heading into the Tuscan countryside for one of my favorite experiences of the trip—a winery visit complete with lunch and wine tasting. By evening, we arrived in magical Venice.

Day 10: Venice and Murano

A boat ride took us to Murano Island, where we watched master artisans create beautiful glass pieces. Back in Venice, we explored the city’s winding canals, hidden alleyways, St. Mark’s Square, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace. Optional gondola rides offered the perfect Venetian experience. I opted for the gondola ride and it was one of the many highlights of my trip!

Day 11: Verona and Lake Maggiore

After departing Venice, we stopped in Verona, famous for its connection to Romeo and Juliet. Later, we arrived in Stresa on beautiful Lake Maggiore. While many travelers know Lake Como, Lake Maggiore was one of the most pleasant surprises of the trip.

Day 12: Italian Lakes and Farewell Celebration

Today offered a choice between visiting the stunning Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella or traveling into Switzerland through the Simplon Pass. I chose Isola Bella, which allowed time to further explore Stresa in the afternoon. That evening, we celebrated our journey together with a farewell dinner on Isola dei Pescatori.

Day 13: Arrivederci, Italy

Today marked the end of an unforgettable journey through Italy. From Rome and Capri to Tuscany, Venice, and the Italian Lakes, this tour provided an incredible introduction to the country’s history, culture, scenery, and cuisine. While the trip may have ended, the memories will stay with me for years to come. Italy is truly incredible and a place I would return to again and again.

The Food: A Highlight of Every Day

Let’s be honest—one of the best parts of visiting Italy is the food, and this tour did not disappoint.

From fresh pasta in Gragnano and authentic Neapolitan flavors near Sorrento to Tuscan wines, regional specialties, and unforgettable gelato stops, every destination offered something unique. One of my favorite culinary experiences was enjoying lunch and wine tasting at a Tuscan winery, where delicious local dishes were paired with incredible wines and beautiful countryside views.

Of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without pizza, pasta, espresso, and a few (or more) scoops of gelato along the way. I also couldn’t resist trying the famous lemon sorbet served in a lemon while visiting Capri—a refreshing treat that perfectly captured the flavors of southern Italy.

Beyond the meals themselves, what stood out most was how each region showcased its own traditions and specialties, making every meal feel like part of the cultural experience. Italy truly proves that food isn’t just something you eat—it’s a way of life. 🇮🇹🍝🍷🍋

Excellent Balance of Structure and Free Time

One of the biggest strengths of this itinerary is that it never feels rushed. Guided tours provide valuable context and local insight, but there is also plenty of free time to shop, dine, wander, and discover places on your own.

My Favorite Experience: A Family-Run Winery in Tuscany

While every destination on this tour was memorable, my favorite experience was visiting a family-run winery and farm in the heart of Tuscany (Tenute di Badia).

There’s something special about slowing down and experiencing a destination through its food, wine, and local traditions. Surrounded by rolling vineyards and breathtaking countryside views, we enjoyed a delicious farm-to-table lunch paired with wines produced right on the property. Hearing the family’s story and learning about the generations of passion and hard work behind the winery made the experience feel authentic and personal.

It was a perfect reminder that some of the most meaningful travel moments aren’t always found at famous landmarks—they’re found around a table, sharing a meal, meeting local people, and experiencing a way of life that has been passed down for generations.

Least Favorite Part of the Trip: The Group Size

If I had to choose one aspect of the tour that wasn’t my favorite, it would be the size of the group.

This particular Collette Classic tour had 41 travelers, and the maximum capacity is 44 guests. While I knew that going into the trip and chose this departure because it worked best with my schedule, I generally prefer a more intimate travel experience with fewer people.

A larger group can sometimes mean longer boarding times, more coordination at attractions, and a little less flexibility than you might find on a smaller tour. That said, Collette did an excellent job managing the group, and our tour manager, Manny, kept everything organized and running smoothly throughout the journey.

For travelers who prefer a more personalized experience, Collette also offers Small Group Explorations tours, which typically range from 16 to 24 guests. These itineraries often provide more opportunities for deeper cultural connections, unique accommodations, and access to places that may not be practical for larger groups.

Ultimately, the larger group size wasn’t a dealbreaker for me—I had an incredible trip and made wonderful memories—but if given the choice, I would likely opt for one of Collette’s smaller group experiences in the future.
